How to print digital art at home or at a print shop, A4 to A2

A digital art download gives you a file to print rather than a finished physical item. The useful first decisions are the paper size you want, the matching file and whether your own printer supports the job. A local print shop or online printer can print these files. You can compare those routes before committing to a larger print.
This is Larkspur Editions' own printing guide. Our download manifest records JPG files prepared at 300 dpi in sRGB, with separate A4, A3 and A2 versions. The artwork is fitted within the paper without cropping, with a white border where needed. No physical item or frame is shipped with the digital download.
Choose the paper size first
The three sizes have these dimensions, with width and height swapped for landscape orientation:
| Paper size | Portrait dimensions | Manifest pixel dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | 2480 × 3508 px |
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm | 3508 × 4961 px |
| A2 | 420 × 594 mm | 4961 × 7016 px |
The manifest's pixel dimensions correspond to those paper sizes at 300 dpi, with rounding to whole pixels. DPI means dots per inch: it describes the intended print resolution here. Select the file labelled for the paper size you want instead of enlarging a smaller version simply because it is easier to find.
If you are choosing a frame as well, compare its stated picture opening with the intended paper size. The frame's outer dimensions are a separate measurement. A mount may change how much of the paper is visible, so check the product information before placing an order.
Use the supplied JPG
Work from the downloaded file, rather than a website preview, screenshot or saved social image. Those previews are there to help you choose artwork and are not the print files described in the manifest. Keep an untouched copy of the download so you can return to it if a print-service upload changes your working copy.
The Tidewash digital download collection and Line and Leaf digital download collection are two starting points if you want to compare coastal washes with minimal botanical line studies. Look at the individual artwork and select its matching size file; the printing process begins with that file rather than the collection's room imagery.
Check whether home printing fits the job
Consult your printer's documentation for supported paper sizes, paper types and settings. Do not assume a printer that handles A4 also handles A3 or A2. If the required size is unsupported, a print shop can be the more straightforward route. Confirm its equipment and accepted file requirements with the provider.
For a home print, check the preview in your printing application before proceeding. Look for the intended paper size, orientation and treatment of the image edges. The supplied artwork is prepared without cropping; a setting that fills the sheet by cropping may change that composition. If a setting is unclear, use the application's or printer's own documentation.
Ask a print shop clear questions
Tell the provider which paper size you want and that the supplied JPG is prepared at 300 dpi in sRGB. Ask whether it accepts that file directly, what paper options it offers and whether its process adds a border or crops the image. If it requests a different file specification, clarify that requirement before altering the download.
You can also ask to see paper samples or order a proof where offered. Describe the finish you prefer in everyday terms, such as a less reflective appearance or visible surface texture, and let the provider explain its available choices. There is no need to assume that a more expensive paper will produce the result you personally prefer.
Compare colour with a physical proof
A screen preview is useful for choosing a composition, but it is not a promise that a paper print will look identical. The file's sRGB colour space is recorded in the download manifest. Keep that supplied file intact unless your chosen provider gives a specific reason and process for changing it.
For softer palettes, you might compare the Neutral Arches digital download collection or Wildflower Margins digital download collection. A proof gives you something physical to assess in the room where you intend to enjoy it. Look at the pale areas, darker detail and overall colour balance before ordering additional copies or a larger size.
Keep a simple printing record
Save the artwork file name, chosen paper size, provider or printer settings and paper description. If you like the result, those notes give you a useful starting point next time. If you want a different result, change one choice at a time and compare it with the previous print. Begin with a file that matches your intended size, check the preview and provider requirements, and use a proof to make the final decision concrete.
